When a graph misleads — Data, 11–13 years
A graph can use true numbers and still give a false impression if its scale, labels or design hide the comparison.
Check the whole picture
A graph is not just its bars, lines or colours. To read it fairly, check what is being measured, the units, the time period, the axis scale and whether anything is missing. A visual impression is a clue, not the conclusion.
Why can design mislead?
The problem is that people need to spot patterns quickly, so graphs use visual size, position and colour. Those features can help, but they can also exaggerate a difference or hide uncertainty. Careful graph reading developed because decisions based on data can affect money, health and public choices.
A truncated axis
A shop sold 98 notebooks on Monday and 100 on Tuesday. The real difference is 2 notebooks, or about 2%. A graph whose vertical axis runs from 0 to 100 shows two nearly equal bars. If it runs only from 97 to 100, the second bar looks three times as tall, although the data have not changed.
Trusting a dramatic picture
A common mistake is believing the biggest-looking difference must be the biggest numerical difference. That is reasonable because pictures are designed to be noticed before details are read. The cure is not to distrust every graph: read its title, axes and units, then compare the actual values.
Making sense of claims
You meet graphs in news stories, adverts, social media posts, election reports and health information. Before sharing a claim, ask what the graph compares and whether the scale is fair. This will not prove that the data are correct, but it can stop a clever presentation from deciding what you believe.
