The mode is the most popular value

The mode tells you which result occurs most often. It may be a number, such as the most common shoe size, or a label, such as the favourite fruit. A data set can have one mode, two modes, or no mode if nothing occurs more often than the rest.

Why find the mode?

Sometimes the useful question is not “What is the average?” but “What happens most often?” Shops need to know the most common size, and a class might want to know its most popular activity. The mode answers that question without changing the results into a single average.

Finding the mode

The bus times are 8, 7, 8, 9, 8 and 7 minutes. Count each value: 7 appears twice, 8 appears three times and 9 appears once. Since 8 appears most often, the mode is 8 minutes. Notice that we count appearances, not the size of the number.

The biggest number is not the mode

A large number can feel important, so it is tempting to choose it as the mode. But the mode is about how many times a value appears, not how large it is. In 2, 4, 4, 9, the mode is 4, even though 9 is the biggest number.

Mode in everyday choices

A bakery can check which loaf size sells most often before deciding what to bake. A sports coach can find the most common number of players at practice. The mode helps when the most frequent choice matters, especially for categories that cannot be averaged, such as colours or types of food.
