A microphone can carry your spoken words to a computer. The computer tries to turn the sounds into words or an action, but it can misunderstand.

The microphone listens for a command

When voice input is turned on, a microphone catches the sounds you make. Software looks for words it knows and may use them to search, write, or start an action. You are not talking directly to a person; a computer is measuring and interpreting the sound.

Why speak instead of tap?

Typing every letter can be slow, and sometimes your hands are busy or cannot easily use a keyboard. Voice input offers another way to tell a device what you want. It was developed to make machines respond to spoken language, though speech is harder for a machine to understand than a button press.

Ask for a colour

First, tap the microphone and wait for its listening sign. Next, say clearly, “red”. The device changes the word into text or uses it to choose red, if that is the available command. Finally, check the result: sound became information, then information caused an action.

It does not hear meaning perfectly

You may expect the device to understand every word because people usually understand your voice. That is reasonable, but noise, a quiet voice, an accent, or two similar words can confuse it. Speak clearly, look at the result, and correct it rather than trusting every word automatically.

Hands-free help

Voice input can start a timer while you are mixing a cake, search for a song while your hands are full, or write a short note for you. It is useful, but remember that a microphone hears the surrounding sounds too, so use it thoughtfully when other people are speaking.
