Learn how a computer can imitate a situation so we can test ideas safely, quickly and repeatedly.
A model that can change
A simulation is a computer-made version of a real or imagined situation. It follows rules about what might happen, then lets us change details and watch the result. It is not the real thing: it is a model useful for asking “what if?” without having to wait or take the same risks.
Why use a simulation?
The problem is that some real experiments are too slow, expensive, dangerous or impossible to repeat. Scientists and designers use models to explore possibilities before building or changing the real thing. Computers made it possible to calculate many connected changes quickly, although the result is only as good as the model’s rules and starting information.
Testing a pond model
We make a simple pond simulation with 10 fish and 20 units of food. Each round, every fish eats 1 unit, so after one round 10 units remain. If the model says each fish makes one new fish when food remains, there are 20 fish next round. We can then test what happens when food starts at 5 instead.
The tempting mistake
A reasonable mistake is to believe that a simulation predicts the future exactly because it uses numbers. It cannot know every real detail, and its rules may be too simple or based on a wrong guess. The pond model above is not a real ecosystem: it is a test of the rules we chose, so its result needs careful interpretation.
Where simulations are used
Simulations are used to practise flying, forecast weather and test how traffic might move. A game can simulate a racing car, but a training simulator may copy important controls and dangers of a real aircraft. In each case, the model is useful for a particular purpose, not a perfect copy of everything.
