Computers store pictures, sounds and words as patterns of numbers. Seeing how this works explains why one machine can keep and change so many different kinds of information.

Information becomes patterns

A computer does not keep a photograph as a tiny paper picture inside it. It records many small pieces of information as numbers, and those numbers can describe colour, sound or letters. The machine follows agreed patterns so it can rebuild the picture or play the sound later.

Why use numbers?

Computers need a form that electronic parts can handle reliably: signals can be present or absent, strong or weak. Number patterns make information easy to copy, compare, save and send without guessing what it means. Without a shared code, one device might read the same pattern differently from another.

A tiny black-and-white picture

Imagine a 3-by-3 picture made only of black and white squares. Let 1 mean black and 0 mean white. A pattern such as 101, 010, 101 makes a simple X: the computer saves nine bits, then lights the squares marked 1. Real photos use many more squares and more colour values.

A 1 is not always the number one

It is natural to think that every 1 stored by a computer means the quantity one. In a picture, however, 1 might mean “make this square black”; in text, a pattern might mean the letter A. The meaning comes from the agreed format, just as a red light means stop because people share that rule.

Pictures, music and messages

Every time you take a photo, listen to a song or send a message, a device is storing and moving patterns of information. The same basic idea lets a tablet show a drawing and lets a speaker play music. It is useful because the patterns can be copied perfectly, unlike a paper photo that can tear or fade.
