Latin conjunctions — Classical languages, 11–13 years

Latin conjunctions join words or clauses and show how their ideas fit together. A small word such as et, sed, or quod can change the logic of a whole sentence.

Small words, clear links

A conjunction is a joining word. In Latin, et means “and”, sed means “but”, aut means “or”, and quod can mean “because” or “that”, depending on its setting. These words do not merely fill space: they tell you whether ideas are added, contrasted, offered as alternatives, or explained.

Why connect the ideas?

Without a conjunction, two actions can sit next to each other while their relationship stays unclear. “The sailor stayed. The storm grew.” does not tell us whether the storm caused the stay, merely followed it, or contrasted with it. Conjunctions solve this problem by giving the reader a signpost. They make reasoning visible inside the sentence.

Following quod

Read: nauta manet quod tempestas saeva est. First, identify nauta, “the sailor”, and manet, “stays”. Next, find quod, which introduces a reason here: “because”. Then translate tempestas saeva est as “the storm is fierce”. Put the pieces together: “The sailor stays because the storm is fierce.” The conjunction reveals why the two clauses belong together.

The tiny-word trap

Readers often skip short words because the longer words look more important. That is understandable: nauta and tempestas carry vivid images, while quod looks almost invisible. But skipping quod can turn “because the storm is fierce” into an unexplained second statement. Small does not mean unimportant; the conjunction may carry the sentence’s key logical link.

Making an argument

Conjunctions matter wherever someone explains, argues, tells a story, or gives instructions. In a Latin inscription, a speech, or a motto, et may add a claim, sed may turn it, and quod may explain it. The same skill works in modern writing: noticing “and”, “but”, and “because” helps you test whether an argument really follows.
