Acid meeting base
In neutralisation, an acid and a base react so that each loses some of its original effect. The products are usually a salt and water, although the final mixture is not automatically exactly neutral; that depends on the amounts and strengths used.
Why neutralisation matters
Strongly acidic or basic substances can irritate skin, damage materials or harm living things. Neutralisation gives us a controlled way to reduce that danger, instead of trying to hide it by simply diluting or wiping the substance away.
An antacid example
Suppose a stomach contains excess acid and an antacid tablet contains a base. First, the tablet dissolves and its particles spread through the stomach liquid. Next, the base reacts with some acid, reducing its acidity; using too much can make the mixture basic, so the dose matters.
Neutral does not mean harmless
A reasonable mistake is to treat “neutral” as meaning safe in every situation, because pH 7 sounds like a perfect middle point. Neutralisation only describes a chemical change; the products may still be harmful, and an excess of acid or base can remain.
Neutralisation in real life
Antacids neutralise some excess stomach acid. Farmers can add crushed limestone to soil that is too acidic, helping crops grow, while water-treatment workers adjust acidity so pipes, rivers and aquatic life are less likely to be damaged.
