The idea
A flower is a plant’s structure for sexual reproduction. Pollen carries male sex cells from an anther to the stigma, and the ovule contains a female sex cell. If they join, a seed can form; the ovary may grow into a fruit around it.
Why flowers and pollen?
Plants cannot walk to meet one another, yet their sex cells must come together. Flowers solve this problem by exposing pollen and attracting carriers such as bees, butterflies or wind. Reproduction mixes material from two parent plants, which creates variation among their offspring.
A worked example
A bee visits a yellow apple blossom and picks up pollen from its anther. It then lands on another blossom and pollen sticks to that flower’s stigma. A pollen tube grows towards an ovule, fertilisation occurs, and the ovary later develops into an apple containing seeds.
A common trap
It is easy to think that every flower becomes a fruit, because flowers and fruits appear on the same plant. In fact, pollination may fail, or the ovule may not be fertilised. A fruit forms only when the plant completes the necessary steps, and some flowers are also wind-pollinated.
Where it is used
Fruit growers place beehives near orchards because bees can improve pollination and fruit production. Gardeners also hand-pollinate some flowers when insects are scarce. Understanding seeds and their dispersal helps people grow crops and restore native plants without treating every plant as if it reproduced in the same way.
