Homeostasis: keeping conditions steady — Biology, 11–13 years

Cells work best when conditions inside the body stay within safe limits. Homeostasis is the set of adjustments that keeps things such as temperature, water and blood sugar from changing too far.

A body that adjusts

Your body is not kept at one perfectly fixed setting. Instead, it constantly makes small corrections around a safe range: you sweat when too warm, shiver when too cold, and your kidneys adjust how much water leaves in urine.

Why steady conditions matter

Chemical reactions in cells depend on suitable temperature, water and acidity. Outside their safe ranges, these reactions slow down or go wrong. Homeostasis solves the problem of a changing world by keeping the inside of the body suitable for cells.

Cooling down after running

1. Running makes muscles release extra heat. 2. Temperature sensors notice that your body is warmer. 3. The brain signals sweat glands and skin blood vessels. 4. Sweat evaporates and more warm blood reaches the skin, helping body temperature move back towards its usual range.

Steady does not mean unchanged

It is easy to think homeostasis means the body never changes at all. That is reasonable because words such as “steady” sound fixed, but the body usually reaches stability through many small changes that correct a rise or fall.

Water, exercise and illness

After exercise, drinking water replaces some fluid lost in sweat. In a fever, the body’s temperature control can be shifted, so a person feels cold while the temperature rises. These examples show that health depends on regulation, not on never changing.
