How biologists group living things by shared features, so a huge variety of life becomes easier to study and compare.

The idea

There are millions of kinds of living things, so biologists sort them into groups that share important features. A bat belongs with mammals, not birds, because it has hair and feeds its young with milk, even though it flies. Smaller groups show closer similarities.

Why make groups?

Without a shared system, two scientists could use different names for the same organism, or the same name for different ones. Classification gives them a common map for identifying life and noticing relationships. It began with simple visible features, but modern systems also compare cells, DNA and evolutionary history.

A worked example

Imagine classifying a dolphin. First, it has a backbone, so it is a vertebrate. Next, it breathes air with lungs and feeds its young with milk, so it is a mammal. Finally, its body and teeth fit the mammal group that includes whales and dolphins. Each observation narrows the group.

A common trap

A common mistake is grouping organisms by one striking feature only: putting bats with birds because both fly. That seems sensible because flying is easy to see, but it ignores other evidence. Good classification uses several features, especially ones that reveal deeper relationships.

Where it is used

Field biologists use classification to identify an unfamiliar plant, insect or animal and record it accurately. Conservation teams can then tell which species are rare or threatened. Farmers, doctors and museums also rely on correct names because different organisms can need very different care or treatment.
