Apoptosis removes cells that are damaged, old or no longer needed, without harming nearby tissue. It is a controlled biological process, not simply a cell failing.
A tidy ending
A cell can receive signals telling it to dismantle itself. It breaks its contents into small packages, which nearby cells clear away; the membrane usually stays intact, so there is little inflammation. This planned removal helps shape and maintain a body.
Why remove living cells?
Keeping every cell forever would make development impossible and allow damaged cells to cause trouble. During development, apoptosis removes the webbing between your fingers and extra nerve cells that fail to connect. The process also limits cells with dangerous internal damage.
A simple cell-count example
Imagine a tissue with 1,000 cells, including 100 cells carrying severe DNA damage. A signal activates the death programme in those 100 cells, and immune cells remove their fragments. The tissue is left with 900 safer cells, without spilling cell contents into the surroundings.
Not all cell death is the same
It is reasonable to call any dead cell a failure, but apoptosis is more like a controlled dismantling. In uncontrolled injury, a cell may swell and burst, releasing contents that trigger inflammation. Apoptosis usually packages the remains first, so the surrounding tissue is protected.
Where it matters
Apoptosis helps explain development, tissue repair and some diseases. If the process is too weak, damaged cells may survive and contribute to cancer; if it is too strong, cells may be lost in conditions such as some neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers study both sides.
