Our senses send information to the brain — Biology, 7–10 years

Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin detect changes around us. The brain helps us understand those signals and choose a response.

Detecting and responding

Your sense organs collect clues: eyes detect light, ears detect sounds, and skin detects touch and temperature. Nerves carry messages to the brain, which helps make sense of them. The brain can then send instructions to muscles, such as moving your hand.

Why a body needs senses

The world changes constantly: something may be hot, sharp, loud, dark, or moving quickly. Senses give the body information early enough to find food, communicate, and avoid danger. Without them, a person could still act, but would miss important clues about what is happening.

Touching a warm mug

1. Your fingers touch a mug that is hotter than expected. 2. Receptors in the skin detect the heat. 3. Nerves carry a message to the spinal cord and brain. 4. The nervous system sends instructions to pull your hand away. 5. You may then see steam or smell tea, adding more information.

The brain is part of sensing

It is reasonable to say that eyes see and ears hear, because those organs collect the first signals. But the brain is needed to interpret the signals: eyes detect light patterns, while the brain helps recognise a face. Sensing is a team effort, not a job done by one organ alone.

Senses help us stay safe

At a road crossing, you may see a red light, hear traffic, and feel the ground under your feet. Using several senses together gives a fuller picture before you move. This does not make every situation safe, so rules and careful attention still matter.
