When a leaf falls or an animal dies, it does not simply vanish. Fungi, worms, woodlice and many tiny organisms break the dead material into smaller parts. These decomposers help return useful materials to the soil, where plants can use them again.

Why decomposition matters

Without decomposition, dead leaves and bodies would pile up, while important materials would remain locked inside them. Decomposers solve both problems: they clear dead matter and release materials such as minerals. Nature can then use those materials again instead of needing a new supply each time.

What happens to a leaf

Imagine a leaf in a compost heap. First, worms and woodlice tear it into smaller pieces. Next, fungi and other tiny decomposers act on those pieces. Finally, the dark compost contains materials that can mix into the soil and help a new plant grow.

They do not make matter vanish

It is easy to say that decomposers make a leaf disappear, because after some time you can no longer see it. What really happens is that the leaf is changed into smaller materials, gases and compost. The pieces may be hard to notice, but they have not become nothing.

Compost and healthy soil

A compost bin uses decomposition to turn some food scraps and garden waste into compost. Gardeners mix it into soil to add materials that plants need. In a forest, the same process happens naturally under fallen leaves, without anyone building a compost bin.
