The Solar System’s different worlds — Astronomy, 11–13 years

The planets are not smaller or larger copies of Earth. Their size, materials, temperatures and atmospheres make them very different worlds, all held in the Sun’s family.

A family of very different worlds

The Solar System is more than the Sun and eight planets: it also contains moons, asteroids and comets. The four inner planets are small and rocky, while the outer planets are much larger and made mostly of gas or ice. They all travel around the Sun, but each is its own kind of world.

Why sort the planets?

Early sky-watchers saw bright points moving against the stars, but could not tell what they were. Comparing planets by size, material and distance from the Sun helps explain their behaviour instead of making a list to memorise. It also shows why Earth is rocky, why Jupiter is huge, and why distant worlds can be icy.

Reading a planet’s clues

Take Mars as an example. First, its surface is solid and rocky, so it belongs with the inner rocky planets. Second, it is farther from the Sun than Earth, so it receives less sunlight and is colder overall. Third, its thin atmosphere cannot keep much heat, helping explain its cold, dusty surface.

The picture-book trap

A common mistake is to trust a classroom picture for planet sizes and distances. It is reasonable: a diagram must enlarge tiny planets and bring faraway orbits close enough to fit on a page. But the same picture cannot show true scale for both size and distance, so check which feature the diagram is meant to compare.

Why this matters beyond school

Planet comparisons help mission teams choose spacecraft paths, landing places and instruments. Engineers need to know whether a world has a solid surface, thick atmosphere, extreme cold or powerful storms. The same thinking helps when reading a news story about a newly discovered exoplanet: its name is not enough; its conditions matter.
