Phases of the Moon — Astronomy, 11–13 years

The Moon changes shape in our view because sunlight reveals different parts of its lit half.

The idea

The Moon does not make its own visible light; sunlight illuminates half of it. As the Moon travels around Earth, we see different amounts of that bright half. These changing appearances are called phases, from new Moon to full Moon and back again.

Why we need this idea

The Moon’s shape in the sky changes in a regular pattern, so people needed to explain and predict it. A simple idea such as the Moon changing its own shape does not explain why the pattern repeats or why the bright part always points towards the Sun. Its orbit and the direction of sunlight explain both observations.

A worked example

Place a lamp as the Sun, a ball as the Moon and your head as Earth. With the ball between you and the lamp, its bright side faces away from you: new Moon. Move it a quarter-turn: you see half the lit side, like a first quarter. Put it opposite the lamp: the whole near side is bright, a full Moon.

The common trap

A common mistake is to think that Earth’s shadow causes every Moon phase. That idea is reasonable because a shadow really can make the Moon look dark during a lunar eclipse. Most of the time, however, the shadow misses the Moon; we are simply seeing different angles of its sunlit half.

Where it is used

Moon phases help people plan observations, because a full Moon is bright while a thin crescent leaves a darker sky for seeing faint stars. Lunar calendars also use the repeating cycle, which lasts about 29 and a half days from one new Moon to the next. The phases are not a reliable way to predict daily weather.
