How telescopes reveal the sky — Astronomy, 11–13 years
A telescope does more than magnify: it gathers much more light and can detect kinds of light our eyes cannot see. This explains why astronomers use different telescopes for different questions.
Collecting light
A telescope gives astronomers a larger opening than the human eye, so it collects more light from faint or distant objects. It can also make fine details easier to separate. Some telescopes collect visible light; others detect radio, infrared or X-ray light.
Why build bigger or different telescopes?
Astronomers often face two problems: distant objects are too faint, and details are blurred together. A bigger collecting area gathers more photons, while a suitable detector reveals information hidden outside visible light. One instrument cannot answer every astronomical question.
Why a large mirror helps
A circular mirror 2 metres across has radius 1 metre, so its area is about 3.14 square metres. A 20-centimetre mirror has radius 0.1 metre and area about 0.031 square metres. The larger mirror collects about 100 times as much light, if other conditions are equal.
Magnification is not everything
It is reasonable to think that the strongest zoom must show the most detail, because a nearby object looks bigger. In astronomy, too much magnification can make a dim image blurry and shaky. Light-gathering power and sharpness matter just as much as magnification.
Watching more than stars
Weather satellites, medical scanners and some cameras use the same broad idea: collect signals that eyes cannot easily read and turn them into an image. Astronomers use radio telescopes to study cold gas and infrared instruments to see through some dusty regions.
