Constellations and star maps — Astronomy, 11–13 years

Learn why people join stars into patterns, how those patterns help us find our way across the night sky, and why a constellation is not usually a group of nearby stars.

A pattern on the sky

A constellation is a named patch of sky containing stars that look arranged in a pattern from Earth. The stars may be at very different distances, so the shape is a viewpoint effect, like a picture made by drawing lines between scattered lights.

Why make star patterns?

Before accurate clocks and electronic maps, people needed reliable signs for direction, seasons and travel. Recognisable patterns made the changing sky easier to remember and share, even though the stars themselves were not physically joined together.

Reading Orion

Suppose you see three bright stars in a short, almost straight row: Orion’s Belt. Look below it for a smaller line of stars, the Sword, and above it for two bright corner stars. Comparing these features with a map lets you identify Orion, even if some stars are faint.

The stars are not a group

It is natural to think that stars in a neat shape must be neighbours, because objects in a picture usually sit together. But a constellation is a line-of-sight pattern: one star can be much closer than another. From a different place in space, the shape could look completely different.

Finding directions

Star patterns have helped sailors and travellers estimate direction, especially when the North Star is visible. Today, sky maps and phone apps still use constellations to label regions of the sky and help observers aim a telescope at a chosen object.
