How galaxies are structured — Astronomy, 14–17 years
Galaxies are enormous systems of stars, gas, dust and dark matter. Their shapes and internal structures record how they formed and changed over time.
The idea
Galaxies are not all shaped alike. Spiral galaxies have a flat disc, arms and often a central bulge; elliptical galaxies are rounder and usually contain older stars; irregular galaxies lack a clear overall shape. These are broad patterns, not rigid boxes.
Why classify them
When astronomers first saw many fuzzy objects, they needed a useful way to compare them and ask whether the shapes were linked to age or history. Classification made patterns visible. It does not by itself explain how a galaxy formed; it is a map for testing explanations.
A worked example
Imagine a galaxy with a bright central region, a thin disc and two curved arms. Step one: the disc rules out a typical elliptical shape. Step two: the arms identify it as spiral. Step three: bright blue patches in the arms suggest young stars forming there, while the central bulge looks older.
The common trap
A common mistake is treating the categories as a neat life cycle: irregular, then spiral, then elliptical. That feels natural because many things develop through stages, but galaxies do not follow one universal sequence. Collisions, gas supplies and gravity can change their shapes in different ways.
Where it is used
Researchers classify large surveys of galaxies to discover how star formation changes across cosmic time. They compare shapes with gas, colour, mass and environment, such as crowded clusters. This helps test ideas about mergers and the growth of galaxies without assuming every galaxy has the same history.
