The Moon keeps its round shape, but we see different amounts of its sunlit half as it travels around Earth.
The Moon is always round
The Moon is a round rocky world, but it does not make its own light. Sunlight lights one half of it. From Earth, we see different portions of that bright half, so the Moon can look like a thin curve, a half-circle or a full circle.
Why does it seem to change?
People noticed that the Moon’s shape in the evening repeats in a pattern. Knowing that pattern helped them count longer stretches of time before calendars and clocks were common. The changing view happens because the Moon moves around Earth while sunlight reaches it from one direction.
Three moon views
Imagine a lamp as the Sun and hold a white ball as the Moon. Keep one side of the ball facing the lamp. When the ball is between you and the lamp, its bright side faces away: you see almost no Moon. Move it to your side: you see half. Put it opposite the lamp: you see a full bright circle.
The Moon is not being eaten
A crescent Moon can look like someone has taken a bite from it, so that is an understandable first idea. Nothing is biting or covering the Moon. The whole Moon is still there; from our position, only a smaller part of its sunlit side faces us.
Watching the month
If you draw the Moon’s shape each evening, the drawings change from a thin curve to a round face and back again. This repeating pattern is one reason the word month is linked to the Moon in many languages. Clouds or daylight may hide it, so one missed evening is not a problem.
