The sky looks different at different times because Earth turns and different places face the Sun.
A turning Earth
Earth is a round world that slowly spins, like a ball turning on a finger. The side facing the Sun has daylight, while the side turned away has night. We do not feel the turning because Earth is very large and moves smoothly.
Why does the sky change?
People needed to know when it was light enough to travel, work and rest. Watching the Sun rise and set gave them a reliable pattern before clocks existed. The pattern is not the Sun going around us each day; it comes from Earth turning.
A lamp and a ball
Place a lamp in the middle of a dark room and call it the Sun. Put a sticker on one side of a ball for your town. When the sticker faces the lamp, it is daytime there. Turn the ball halfway around: the sticker is dark, so it is night.
The Sun did not switch off
It is reasonable to think night begins because the Sun switches off or goes behind a nearby hill. We see the Sun disappear, so that idea matches what our eyes tell us. But the Sun keeps shining; our part of Earth has simply turned away from it.
A daily rhythm
Day and night help people plan ordinary life: getting up in daylight, watching for darkness and sleeping at night. Animals use the same rhythm; some search for food in the day and others at night. A clock measures time, but daylight still helps us notice the pattern.
