Astronauts and spacesuits — Astronomy, 4–6 years

Astronauts work in places where there is no breathable air and conditions can be dangerous. A spacesuit is a small personal spacecraft that helps a person stay alive and do useful work.

What a spacesuit does

A spacesuit gives an astronaut air to breathe and helps keep the body at a safe temperature. It protects the eyes and skin from dust, sharp objects and strong sunlight. Gloves let the astronaut hold tools, while a radio lets them talk to people inside the spacecraft.

Why astronauts need suits

Earth’s air and atmosphere protect us, but space does not provide a supply we can breathe. An astronaut outside a spacecraft needs the same basics as a diver underwater: air, protection and a way to communicate. Spacesuits were made to solve this problem, so people could explore and repair equipment beyond a spacecraft’s walls.

Getting ready to step outside

Suppose an astronaut must inspect a camera outside a spacecraft. First, they put on the suit and check its seals. Next, the suit supplies oxygen and cooling while the radio is tested. Then a safety line is attached before the door opens. Only after these checks can the astronaut move carefully, inspect the camera and report back.

A reasonable mix-up

A spacesuit can look like thick clothing, so it is easy to think it is mainly for warmth. It does help control temperature, but warmth is only one job. The suit also holds air pressure, supplies oxygen, removes carbon dioxide and protects the body. Without those parts, a warm suit would not make space safe.

Space work and Earth work

Astronauts use suits during repairs, experiments and walks outside a spacecraft. The same idea helps people on Earth: firefighters wear protective equipment, divers carry air, and doctors use special clothing to keep germs away. These are not the same as spacesuits, but each piece is designed for a particular danger or need.
