What a space probe is

A space probe is a robot spacecraft sent to investigate a place beyond Earth. It may carry cameras, thermometers, chemical sensors or a drill, then send its measurements by radio. Unlike a crewed spacecraft, it does not need air, food or a safe room for people.

Why send robots

Many worlds are too far away, cold, hot or dangerous for people to visit easily. Scientists needed a way to collect evidence there without putting a crew at risk, so they designed machines that can travel, measure and report. A probe cannot replace every human decision, but it can reach places we cannot.

A Mars rover at work

NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars on 18 February 2021. First, its cameras photographed the ground; next, its instruments examined rocks and soil; then it sent the results back to Earth by radio through orbiting spacecraft. Scientists used those measurements to study whether ancient Mars could once have supported life.

A probe is not a tiny astronaut

It is easy to imagine a probe as a tiny astronaut, because both travel through space and explore. But a probe has no eyes, feelings or general understanding: its instruments collect particular kinds of data, and its computers follow instructions. Engineers must decide what to measure and how to handle surprises.

Probes in the world around us

Space probes produce maps, weather measurements and close-up pictures that scientists and the public can use. The same skills—sensors, careful coding, radio links and testing—also appear in Earth satellites, underwater robots and machines used in dangerous places. Exploring with robots helps people learn without sending a person everywhere.
