A black hole is a region where matter has been squeezed so strongly that even light cannot escape from a boundary around it.

A black hole is a place, not a hole in space

A black hole can form when the centre of a very massive star collapses. Its gravity becomes so strong that, past an invisible boundary called the event horizon, nothing that enters can come back out, not even light. We cannot see the hole itself, but we can see its effects.

Why did scientists need this idea?

Astronomers noticed stars and hot gas moving as if an unseen, extremely massive object were nearby. They needed an explanation that fitted both the movements and the fact that no light came from the object. A black hole is the model that makes these clues fit together.

The black hole at our galaxy’s centre

1. Astronomers tracked stars near the centre of the Milky Way for years. 2. They found stars whipping around an invisible point. 3. Their speeds and paths showed that about four million Suns’ worth of mass was packed there. 4. The object is called Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole.

Black holes do not suck up everything

Pictures and the name can make a black hole seem like a giant cosmic vacuum cleaner. But far away, its gravity acts like the gravity of any object with the same mass. Things fall in only if they come close enough or lose the motion that keeps them in orbit.

A tool for understanding the universe

Black holes help scientists test how gravity, space and time behave in extreme conditions. Astronomers study the light and motion of gas and stars around them, rather than looking directly at the black hole. The same observations can reveal how galaxies grow and change.
