Who did it? Say so — Writing Room · Free Press
The Brightwater Bugle's draft is full of sentences where things 'were done' but nobody seems to have done them. Readers keep asking 'by whom?'.
Your task
Sort each sentence: clear about who did what, or foggy?
- 'The council closed the pool' names who acted (active voice). 'The pool was closed' hides it (passive voice). The passive is not wrong, but in news it can hide who is responsible.
- Invented newsrooms and stories to learn from, not real news. Before sharing anything about real people, ask a trusted adult.
- Never share private details of anyone. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- How news works — You understood how this part of journalism works.
- Truth & accuracy — You checked the facts before telling them.
- Fair & kind — You were fair to the people in the story.
In real life
Many style guides for journalists advise the active voice, so readers can see who did what.
