Before writing: the bone flutes — Music Through Time

Around 40,000 years ago, somebody drilled finger holes in a bird bone and worked out where to put them. Listen to a simple five-note scale and consider that this is roughly what those holes would have produced. Most of the world’s traditional music still uses five notes.
