A smart device can notice something, compare it with a target and respond. Sensors and feedback explain how a thermostat, fitness band or robot keeps adjusting.

Notice, compare, adjust

A sensor measures something in the world, such as temperature, light, movement or distance. A device compares that measurement with a target and changes what it does. When the new measurement comes back, the device can adjust again; this repeated loop is feedback.

Why feedback is useful

A fixed instruction cannot cope well with a changing room, road or person. Feedback solves this problem by letting a device notice whether its action is bringing the situation closer to the target. The idea grew from automatic control systems, where machines had to stay steady without a person adjusting them every second.

A thermostat step by step

A room is set to 20 °C. The thermostat measures 18 °C, compares it with 20 °C and switches the heater on. Later it measures 20.4 °C, so it switches the heater off. If the room cools to 19.6 °C, it turns on again. The repeated measuring and changing keeps the temperature near the target.

The sensor-is-perfect trap

A common mistake is assuming that a sensor reports reality exactly. Sensors have limits: a thermometer may be in the sun, a camera may work poorly in darkness and a step counter may mistake arm movement for walking. This is reasonable because the number looks precise, but every measurement has uncertainty.

Where the loop appears

You meet sensor feedback in automatic doors, phone brightness, car safety systems, fitness bands and robots. It is useful when a device must respond to its surroundings instead of repeating one fixed action. It is not magic: a poor sensor, wrong target or delayed response can still produce a poor result.
