Passwords and encryption protect information — Technology, 11–13 years
Passwords help prove who should enter an account, while encryption scrambles information so outsiders cannot easily read it. They solve related but different problems: access control and private communication.
A lock for accounts, a code for messages
A password is a secret used to show that an account request is probably yours. Encryption changes readable information into scrambled information using a key; someone with the right key can change it back. Good security uses these tools carefully, rather than treating them as magic.
What problem do they solve?
Digital information can be copied perfectly and sent through places you do not control. Passwords limit who enters an account, while encryption helps protect a message if someone else can see or capture it on the way. These ideas grew from the need to share useful information without giving it to everyone.
A simple letter shift
Use a toy code that moves every letter three places forward: A becomes D, B becomes E and so on. The word CAT becomes F DW, because C→F, A→D and T→W; removing the space gives FDW. To read it, move each letter three places back. Real encryption is much stronger than this example.
A password is not automatically safe
People often choose a short, familiar password because it is easy to remember. That is reasonable, but names, birthdays and repeated passwords are also easy for attackers or leaked lists to guess. A longer, unique passphrase is usually safer, and a password should never be shared casually.
Shopping, messages and banking
When a website shows a padlock, encryption is helping protect information between your device and the service. It matters when you sign in, send a private message or pay online, because other systems may carry the data. Still check the address and use a service you trust; a padlock does not make every website honest.
