How information travels across the internet — Technology, 11–13 years
The internet is a network of connected networks. When you send a photo or open a page, the information is split into packets, moved through several devices and put back together at the destination.
Messages travel in packets
A large digital message is usually divided into small packets. Each packet carries some data and information about where it belongs, so network devices can forward it towards the right destination. The packets may take different routes and are joined again at the end.
Why split a message?
One enormous message would occupy a route and be difficult to resend if one part failed. Small packets let many users share the same network and let only missing pieces be sent again. This approach grew from the need to make communication work across busy, changing connections.
Sending three packets
Imagine a photo split into packets A, B and C. A travels through router 1, B through router 2, and C through router 1; B arrives last because its route is busy. The destination uses the labels to place A, B and C back in order and rebuild the photo.
The internet is not one straight wire
It is natural to imagine a message travelling along one fixed cable from your phone to a website. In reality, routers choose among connected paths, and different packets can take different routes. That is why delay can vary and why a connection may continue after one route has a problem.
Video calls and online games
During a video call, packets carry pieces of pictures and sound many times each second. If some arrive late or are lost, the image may freeze or the sound may become broken while the system catches up. Online games also depend on quick, regular packet journeys.
