How 3D printing turns a design into an object — Technology, 11–13 years

A 3D printer builds an object one thin layer at a time from a digital model. The object is not pulled out of the screen: software turns the model into movements the printer can follow.

The idea

A digital 3D model describes the shape of an object from different directions. Slicing software cuts that shape into many flat layers and plans each path. The printer places, melts or hardens material along those paths until the layers form a solid object.

Why it was needed

Making a new shape by hand can require special tools, moulds and waste material. Traditional manufacturing is excellent for making many identical objects, but less convenient for one unusual part. 3D printing offers a direct way to test a design or make a small number of customised objects.

A worked example

Suppose you design a 20 mm cube and set the layer height to 0.2 mm. The slicer calculates 20 ÷ 0.2 = 100 layers. It then plans the outline and filling for each layer, and the printer repeats them from bottom to top. If the first layer is loose, the whole cube may fail.

The common trap

It is tempting to think that printing a bigger object only means waiting longer. That seems reasonable because the same machine is doing the work, but size changes the number of layers and the distance each path travels. Shape, material, supports and layer height also affect the result.

Where it is used

Designers print prototypes to check whether a part fits before making thousands. Engineers use printed models for machines, and doctors can study patient-specific shapes made from scans. Printers can also make useful household parts, but printed objects are not automatically strong, safe or suitable for every job.
