Making with digital tools
A camera can turn a real scene into a picture, and a microphone can turn a voice into a recording. A drawing app lets us make marks, colours and shapes on a screen. Technology gives us new ways to make something we can see or hear.
Why people make digital media
People have always drawn, sung and told stories to show what they notice or imagine. Technology gives these creations a form that can be changed, copied or shared. This helps when words alone cannot show a place, a feeling or an idea clearly.
Making a sound story
Sofia records three sounds: a clap, a cat’s meow and a bell. First, she records each sound separately. Next, she puts them in the order she wants. Finally, she plays them together as a short sound story.
A camera does not invent the whole scene
It can seem that a photograph is the same as the real thing because it shows familiar people or places. But the camera only captures what is in front of it, from one position and one moment. It leaves out what is behind it, outside the frame or happening later.
Creating in everyday life
People use cameras to keep a birthday moment, drawing apps to design a card, and recorders to practise a song. Designers and musicians use similar ideas for bigger projects. The device helps make or change the work, but a person still chooses what to create.
