Wheels, boats, trains and aircraft help people travel farther or more easily. Each works by using a shape, force or source of energy in a useful way.
Getting from here to there
Travel technology helps people move themselves from one place to another. Wheels roll, boats float, trains run on tracks and aircraft move through the air. The vehicle carries people; it does not decide where they should go.
Why make travel easier?
Walking is useful, but it can take a long time and make heavy loads hard to carry. People invented transport to cross water, rough ground and long distances with less effort or more speed. The problem was reaching a place, not simply making objects move.
A journey by bus
Maya needs to travel 3 kilometres to the library. 1. She walks to the bus stop. 2. The bus uses wheels and an engine to travel along the road. 3. It carries Maya for most of the distance. 4. She walks the last 200 metres. The bus has made a long walk easier, but a person still chooses the destination.
The vehicle is not the traveller
A moving bus can look as if it is doing all the travelling by itself. That is a reasonable mistake because we can see the vehicle moving while the passengers sit still. People plan the journey, choose when to get off and use the vehicle as help.
Travel in everyday life
Bicycles, buses, lifts, trains and boats help people reach school, work, shops and other places. They are especially useful when a place is far away or the ground is difficult. Travel still needs choices, care and attention from people.
