Technology grows through trying

People make a plan for something that could help, then build or choose a version and try it. They watch what works and what causes trouble. A new version may have a different shape, material or part, because the design has been improved.

Why improve a design?

A first idea often cannot do everything people need: it may break, leak, be hard to use or cost too much. Trying it reveals the problem better than guessing. People have improved technology for a long time because each change can make a job safer, easier or more useful.

Fixing a lunch box

A child designs a lunch box with a loose lid. First, the box tips over and the yoghurt spills. Next, the child adds a rubber seal and tests it again. The yoghurt stays inside, so the new design solves the leak better. The test showed exactly what needed changing.

The first version need not be perfect

It is tempting to think that a failed try means the idea was bad. Often the try has given useful information: a weak part, a wrong size or a material that does not work. This mistake is reasonable because people usually notice the finished object, not all the versions before it.

Designing in everyday life

People test many things they make, from a paper bridge to a raincoat or a playground. They ask whether it holds, keeps water out or feels safe to use, then change it if needed. Engineers and designers do the same with larger objects, but their tests use more tools and careful plans.
