A search engine helps you find useful pages among millions online. It does not understand every question like a person: it looks at words, stored information and other clues.

The idea

A search engine keeps a huge index, a bit like the index at the back of a book. Programs visit pages, notice their words and links, and record them. When you type a search, the engine compares your words with that index and puts likely useful results first.

Why it was needed

As more people put pages online, remembering every useful address became impossible. Early lists helped, but they could not keep up with the growing web. Search engines were made to turn a question into a manageable list of places to look, saving time without guaranteeing a perfect answer.

Worked example

You search for “how to grow beans”. First, the engine splits the question into important words: grow and beans. Next, it finds indexed pages containing those words. It then ranks pages using clues such as clear instructions, matching words and links from trusted sites, and shows a list for you to check.

The common trap

It is natural to think the first result must be the truest answer, because being first sounds like winning. But ranking can depend on many signals, including popularity, advertising or a close match to the words. Check the author, date and evidence before trusting an important claim.

Where it is used

People use search engines to find a bus timetable, a recipe, a museum’s opening hours or an explanation of an unfamiliar word. Libraries, shops and schools may also use search systems for their own collections. In each case, the result is a starting point, not a substitute for checking.
