A message on the internet is broken into small pieces and sent through connected devices. The pieces can take different routes and are joined again at the destination.

Messages travel in packets

When you send a photo, it is not usually carried as one giant object across the internet. The device breaks the information into small packets, labels them with a destination and sends them through network devices. At the other end, the packets are put back together to show the photo.

Why messages are split up

The problem is that one blocked or broken route should not stop every message. Small packets can use different routes, share the network with other traffic and be sent again if one is lost. This idea grew from the need to keep communication working even when part of a network was busy or damaged.

Worked example: sending “HI”

Suppose a device turns the message “HI” into three packets: H, I and a label saying “message 1 of 2” or “2 of 2”. H travels through one router, while I takes another route. The receiving device checks both labels, notices that neither is missing and joins them in order to display “HI”.

Trap: the internet is one straight line

A reasonable mistake is imagining a message travelling along one fixed wire from your device to a friend’s device. That picture fits a direct phone call, so it feels natural. The internet is more like a network of roads: routers choose routes, and packets may arrive at different times before being reunited.

Where network packets appear

This process carries a video call, a game move, a voice message and a webpage. It also connects computers in libraries, homes, hospitals and shops. A delay or missing packet may make a video freeze, but the network can often continue and request the missing part.
