Families can be made in many ways. What matters is the relationships between the people who share family life.
Family life can look different
Some children live with one parent, some with two, and some with grandparents or other relatives. A family is not identified by one shape; it is made through lasting relationships and shared life.
Why notice family shapes?
Children often see a picture of a family drawn in only one way and may think other homes are wrong. Learning about different families helps us understand our own lives without treating someone else’s family as strange.
A family map
Mia lives with her father, her stepmother and her baby brother. Her grandmother lives nearby and visits on Sundays. On a family map, Mia draws all four people and adds the grandmother, because family connections can include people who live elsewhere.
One picture is not the rule
It is easy to think that every family should have the same people, because books and drawings often use one familiar picture. That picture is only one example, not a test that other families must pass.
Making room for real families
A teacher can invite children to draw the people who are important in their family life, rather than asking for one fixed picture. This lets a class talk about real homes carefully, without asking anyone to reveal private details.
