    A fair test changes one important thing while keeping the others steady, so evidence can answer a clear question.

  2. The particle model

    Matter is made of tiny moving particles. Their spacing and movement help explain solids, liquids, gases and changes of state.

  3. Contact forces

    A force is a push or a pull. Contact forces, such as friction and air resistance, act when objects touch and can change motion.

  4. Food webs

    Living things in an ecosystem are linked by who eats whom. Food webs show that one species can depend on several others, not just one straight chain.

    Offspring receive genetic information from their parents, but they are not exact copies. Inherited differences and differences shaped by the environment help explain why members of one species resemble one another yet vary.

  16. Natural selection

    Natural selection is a process in which inherited differences affect which organisms survive and reproduce. Across many generations, helpful traits can become more common in a population; individuals do not change because they simply need to.

    Materials can be described by the kinds of atoms they contain and how those atoms are joined.

  18. Sound: vibrations, pitch and loudness

    Sound begins with vibrations and travels through matter to reach an ear or a microphone.

    The heart and blood vessels form a transport network that supplies cells and carries waste away.
