The idea
When a ruler bends and springs back, it vibrates. That movement pushes and pulls the air in a pattern, and the pattern reaches your ears as sound. Sound can also travel through water or solid objects, not only through air.
Why it matters
People needed to understand sound to speak across distances, make music and design quieter places. The useful problem is this: how can a movement too small to see become something we hear? Linking vibrations to sound lets us explain echoes, instruments and noise.
A worked example
Stretch a rubber band around an empty box and pluck it. First, the band moves quickly backwards and forwards: it vibrates. Next, the vibrating band makes the box and nearby air vibrate. Finally, those air movements reach your ears, so you hear a note.
A common trap
It is easy to think that sound is a thing travelling through the room, like a small ball. That seems reasonable because sound reaches us from a speaker. In fact, the material only vibrates back and forth; the pattern of movement travels outward.
Where it is used
Musical instruments use vibrating strings, air columns or stretched skins to make different sounds. Buildings and headphones use soft materials to absorb some vibrations and reduce noise. Doctors also use sound waves in scans that show parts inside the body.
