How the skeleton supports and protects the body — Science, 7–10 years

Bones form a strong framework inside the body. They support us, protect delicate organs and work with muscles and joints to make movement possible.

The idea

Your skeleton is a living framework made of bones joined at joints. It gives your body shape and supports its weight. Muscles pull on bones to move them, while some bones form hard shields around organs such as the brain, heart and lungs.

Why it matters

A soft body would collapse under its own weight and its important organs would be easily hurt. The skeleton solves both problems with a firm frame and protective cages. Joints make the frame flexible, so support does not mean staying still.

A worked example

Bend your arm at the elbow. First, the upper-arm bone stays connected to the shoulder and elbow. Next, the elbow joint lets the forearm change angle. Then a muscle pulls on a forearm bone through a tendon, bringing your hand towards your shoulder. The bones guide and support this movement.

The common trap

It is reasonable to imagine bones as dry, dead sticks because they feel hard and are hidden under the skin. In fact, bones are living tissue with blood supply, and they can grow and repair small damage. Their hardness gives support, while their living parts help maintain them.

Where it is used

Doctors use X-ray images to check bones after a fall or to see how a joint is working. Protective equipment applies the same idea: a bicycle helmet spreads and absorbs some of an impact before it reaches the skull. Good movement also depends on keeping bones, joints and muscles working together.
