Why the Moon changes shape — Science, 7–10 years

The Moon does not really grow or shrink. We see different parts of its sunlit half as it travels around Earth.

The idea

The Moon is always a round ball, and half of it is lit by the Sun. As the Moon moves around Earth, our viewpoint changes, so we see different amounts of that bright half. Those changing views are called phases, such as crescent, half moon and full moon.

Why this matters

People once needed to know when nights would be bright and how to mark months before clocks and calendars were common. Watching the Moon gave them a repeating pattern. The phases solve a simple puzzle: the Moon can look different even though the same round object is always there.

A worked example

Imagine a lamp as the Sun, a ball as the Moon and your head as Earth. Hold the ball at arm's length and keep its bright side facing the lamp. When the ball is between you and the lamp, its bright side faces away from you: you see a new moon. Move it a quarter-turn, and you see half of its bright side: a half moon.

The common trap

A natural guess is that Earth's shadow covers the Moon a little more each night. That is reasonable because shadows do cause darkness, but it is not what makes normal phases. Earth's shadow reaches the Moon only during a lunar eclipse; ordinary phases happen because we see the Sunlit half from changing angles.

Where it is useful

You can use the phase pattern to plan an evening observation or understand an old calendar. A full moon rises near sunset and is visible for much of the night, while a new moon is hard to see because its lit side faces away from Earth. The pattern also helps explain why a lunar eclipse is unusual.
