How germs spread and how to stop them — Science, 7–10 years

Some microscopic organisms can make us ill and can travel between people through hands, droplets, food or surfaces. Simple habits can break that journey.

The idea

Germs are tiny living organisms or particles that we usually cannot see without special equipment. Some are harmless or useful, but some cause infections. They can move from one place to another on hands, in droplets from coughing, in unsafe food or through shared objects.

Why this idea is needed

The problem is that illness can spread even when the cause is too small to see. People learned that cleaning wounds, keeping drinking water safe and washing hands can reduce this spread. Knowing the route matters: stopping germs before they reach the mouth, nose, eyes or a wound lowers the chance of infection.

A worked example

Suppose one person has a cold and touches a door handle after coughing into a hand. Step 1: droplets and germs may reach the hand. Step 2: the handle can receive them. Step 3: another person touches it, then rubs an eye. Washing hands before that last step, or coughing into a tissue or elbow, breaks the chain.

The common trap

A reasonable mistake is to think that every germ is dangerous, so all microbes should be destroyed. We cannot see which are which, and some cause illness, so caution makes sense. But many microbes are harmless or helpful, and strong cleaning products can harm people or nature; the goal is to reduce harmful spread, not fear everything invisible.

Where it is useful

This idea helps at home, at school and in places where food is prepared. Wash hands with soap, especially before eating and after using the toilet, cover coughs, and keep raw food separate from ready-to-eat food. These actions do not make the world germ-free; they make common routes into the body less likely.
