The limits of working memory — Psychology, 14–17 years

Working memory is the small mental workspace used to hold and manipulate information for a short time. Its limits explain why clear steps and reduced distraction help thinking.

Working memory lets you keep information active while using it. You use it when you remember the start of a sentence while understanding its end, or when you carry a number in your head during a calculation. It is temporary and limited, not a complete recording of everything you notice.

Why this limit matters

Thinking is not only about knowing facts; it also requires space to compare, arrange and update them. When too much arrives at once, some information is dropped or mixed up. Psychology studies this limit because it helps explain mistakes, mental overload and why instructions work better when they are organised.

Holding a number while calculating

Calculate 27 + 18 in your head. Step 1: keep 27 active. Step 2: split 18 into 10 and 8, then make 27 + 10 = 37. Step 3: keep 37 active while adding 8, giving 45. If a message interrupts between steps, the number 37 may disappear; writing it down moves part of the work outside working memory.

Confusing effort with ability

A common mistake is to think that losing track means you are bad at the subject. That conclusion feels fair because the error appears in your own thinking, but the task may simply have exceeded the available workspace or included distractions. Reducing steps, grouping information or using paper can change the result without changing your intelligence.

Designing better thinking conditions

This idea appears in revision, driving, cooking, sport and using unfamiliar technology. Checklists, labelled steps, short pauses and turning off alerts reduce the amount that must be held at once. They do not make a task dishonest or “too easy”; they let attention focus on the part that really needs judgement.
