Idea
A simple machine does not create energy. It changes the size or direction of a force, often letting you use a smaller force over a longer distance. A ramp, lever, pulley and wheel-and-axle are familiar examples.
Why
Lifting a heavy object straight up can be too hard for one person. People invented ramps, levers and pulleys to spread the effort out or change its direction. The problem is not removed: the object still needs the same energy, but the task becomes manageable.
Worked example
A 60 N box must rise 1 m. With a ramp, you push it 3 m along the slope, ignoring friction. The ideal force is 60 × 1 ÷ 3 = 20 N. You use less force, but over three times the distance.
Common trap
It is tempting to think a machine gives something for nothing: less force must mean less work. A ramp feels easier because the force is smaller, but you travel farther and friction may add extra effort. Machines rearrange the task; they do not provide free energy.
Use
Wheelbarrows, bicycle gears, screwdrivers and wheelchair ramps use this idea. A loading ramp lets workers move equipment upwards with a smaller push, while gears can trade speed for turning force. Designers choose the compromise that suits the job.
