Ramps change how things move — Physics, 4–6 years

A sloping surface lets an object go up or down over a longer path, instead of moving straight up or down.

Idea

A ramp is a surface that goes up or down gradually. It changes a steep lift into a longer slope. An object can roll down it, and a person can push or pull something up it more steadily than straight up.

Why

People needed to move heavy loads without lifting them straight up. A sloping path takes more distance, but it can make the task feel less sudden and easier to control. This is why ramps appeared beside steps and near places where goods had to be moved.

Try it

Put a book on the floor and make a ramp with a board resting on one book. Roll a toy car from the top: it travels down to the floor. Add two books under the board and try again. The ramp is steeper, so the car usually rolls down faster; keep the board secure.

A common mistake

It can seem that a ramp makes every job easier because carts roll down it. But going up still needs effort, and a very steep ramp may be hard to control. A ramp changes the path; it does not make heavy things weightless.

Outside school

Ramps help wheelchairs, pushchairs and suitcases cross a step. They are also used for loading boxes into a van and for skateboarding. Their slope must suit the object and the person, and a safe ramp needs a firm surface and room to stop.
