Idea
Earth is a round world that turns slowly, like a ball spinning on an invisible line through its middle. The side facing the Sun has daylight. The side turned away has night, even though the Sun is still shining.
Why it matters
People once needed to explain why the Sun seemed to travel across the sky and why darkness returned regularly. Earth’s turning gives a simple reason for this repeating pattern: each place takes a turn facing the Sun and then turning away.
Try it step by step
Put a sticker on a ball to be your home and place a lamp nearby as the Sun. Turn the ball slowly. When the sticker faces the lamp, it is daytime there. After half a turn it faces away and has night; after another half turn, daylight returns.
A common mistake
It is natural to think the Sun moves around Earth each day because it appears in a new place in the sky. What changes is our view as Earth turns. The Sun is extremely far away, so its light reaches the day side while the other side is dark.
Where we see it
Day and night help people decide when to wake, work, eat and sleep. Clocks and calendars organise this repeating pattern, while places on the other side of Earth may be having night when we have morning. Astronauts can watch the boundary between light and dark move across Earth.
