Hard and soft materials — Physical education, 4–6 years

Materials do not all feel the same when we press, squeeze or scratch them. Hardness and softness help us choose the right material for a job.

Idea

A hard material keeps its shape when we press it, like a wooden block or a stone. A soft material gives way more easily, like a cushion or a sponge. “Hard” and “soft” describe how a material responds to a push, not how heavy it is.

Why

We need this idea when choosing what should protect, support or feel comfortable. A helmet needs a hard outer shell, while a seat may need a soft cushion. People learned to compare materials by trying to press, scratch and use them for different jobs.

Worked example

Mia wants to stop a toy car at the end of a track. First, she presses a wooden block: it stays firm. Next, she presses a sponge: it squashes. She puts the sponge at the end, because its soft material can cushion the car’s bump.

Common trap

It is easy to think that every hard thing is heavy and every soft thing is light. That seems sensible because stones are often hard and cushions are often light. But a large foam block can be soft and light, while a small metal key can be hard and quite heavy.

In the world

Shoe soles are usually firm enough to protect our feet, while the inside may be soft for comfort. Builders choose hard materials for walls and softer materials for insulation or padding. The choice depends on the job, not on one material being best for everything.
