The Sorites paradox — Philosophy, 14–17 years

When does a pile become a heap, or a person become bald? Tiny changes can make clear rules look unable to mark a clear boundary.

A blurry boundary

The Sorites paradox starts with a plausible thought: removing one grain from a heap does not seem to stop it being a heap. Repeat that step grain by grain, and you appear to reach one grain, which is not a heap. The trouble is that every small change seems harmless, yet the final result is clearly different. The paradox reveals vagueness in words such as “heap”, “tall” and “old”.

Why it matters

The paradox came from ancient Greek debates about language and reasoning. It matters because real decisions often use vague terms: “safe”, “rich”, “late” or “enough”. A rule can work well in ordinary cases while failing at the edges. Philosophers ask whether the problem belongs to the world, to our words, or to the demand that every statement must be simply true or false.

Counting the grains

Suppose 10,000 grains make a heap. Now remove one grain. Step 1: 9,999 grains still seem to make a heap. Step 2: apply the same thought to 9,998, then 9,997, and so on. Step 3: if every one-grain change preserves the word “heap”, the rule eventually says one grain is a heap. The lesson is not that counting failed; it is that the word has no exact everyday cut-off.

Demanding a magic number

A reasonable mistake is to search for the one exact number that turns a non-heap into a heap. We are used to rules with crisp edges, such as “a pass needs 50 points”. But “heap” describes a gradual arrangement, not a measured quantity with a natural switch. A chosen threshold may be useful for a job, yet it is a decision rule, not a discovery of the word’s hidden essence.

Where it shows up

You meet sorites questions in age limits, grading, medical risk and moderation of online content. A policy may need a clear number even when the underlying change is gradual, such as deciding when a delay counts as “late”. The paradox reminds us to state that a boundary is chosen for a purpose, and to review whether it treats borderline cases fairly.
