Loud and quiet sounds — Music, 4–6 years
Music can change how much sound reaches our ears. A song may grow loud, become quiet or move between the two to create feeling and contrast.
Loud and quiet
Volume is how loud or quiet a sound seems. The same note can be played softly or strongly, like a whisper and a clear call. Music can change volume little by little or suddenly.
Why change the volume?
If every sound had the same volume, music could feel flat and important moments might hide. Changes help a player show a gentle beginning, a strong arrival or a quiet ending. People have used this contrast to shape songs and ceremonies.
Making a sound grow
Hum one comfortable note very quietly for two beats. Keep the note going and make it a little louder for the next two beats, then make it quiet again for two beats. The pitch stayed the same; only the volume changed.
Loud is not high
A loud sound can feel as if it is higher because it fills more of our ears. Yet volume and pitch are separate: you can whisper a high note or shout a low note. Listen for “how much” sound and “how high” separately.
Volume in real life
We use quiet voices when someone is sleeping and louder voices when many people need to hear. Musicians use the same choice to make a lullaby calm or a parade exciting. In every case, the room and the listeners matter.
