Recognising flat shapes — Mathematics, 4–6 years

A shape is a way a flat object is made. We can notice its sides and corners, and recognise the same shape even when it is turned, coloured differently, or made larger.

Sides and corners

A triangle has three straight sides and three corners. A square has four straight sides and four corners, while a circle has one curved edge and no corners. We can recognise these features without caring whether the shape is red, blue, large, or small.

Why notice shapes?

People make and choose objects that fit a purpose: wheels should roll, boxes should stack, and signs should be easy to recognise. Looking at sides, corners, and curves helps us sort objects and predict how they may fit or move. Naming a shape is useful only when it helps us notice these features.

Finding the triangles

Look at a triangle on a card. Trace its boundary with your finger and count the straight sides: one, two, three. Count the corners: one, two, three. Now turn the card upside down; it is still a triangle because its three sides and three corners stayed the same.

A turned shape

A child may think a triangle stops being a triangle when its point faces sideways, or that a very large square is a different shape. This is reasonable because we often recognise things by their usual position and size. Check the sides and corners instead: turning or resizing does not change the shape’s structure.

Shapes around us

Shapes help us read signs, build with blocks, fit a lid on a box, and spot a ball or a plate. A round wheel can roll, while flat square faces can meet neatly in a stack. Real objects may have several shapes together, so look at the part you are using.
