Reading bar graphs — Mathematics, 7–10 years

Use bars and a scale to turn a collection of counts into a picture that can be read and compared carefully.

Bars show amounts

A bar graph uses one bar for each category, such as favourite fruit or books read. The bar’s height or length shows the number, and the scale tells you how many each step represents. Labels matter: without them, a tall shape has no clear meaning.

Why draw the data?

A list of numbers can answer one question, but it is slow to compare many categories. People made graphs to see patterns, differences and the largest or smallest amount quickly. A bar graph solves this by giving equal categories a shared scale, while keeping the original counts visible.

A fruit survey

A class chooses fruit: apples 6, bananas 4, oranges 8 and pears 2. On the graph, find the fruit label, then follow its bar to the scale. Oranges reach 8, so they are most popular. Apples have 2 more votes than bananas because 6 − 4 = 2.

Read the scale first

A common mistake is to read each line as one item, even when the scale jumps by 2, 5 or 10. This makes sense because the marks look equally spaced and a bar seems to stop at a line. Check two labelled values before reading: the distance between marks tells you the value of one step.

Where it helps

Bar graphs appear in weather reports, sports results, shop records and surveys. A shop might compare how many red, blue and green notebooks were sold; a coach might compare team scores. The graph helps spot differences, but it does not explain why one amount is larger.
