Division makes equal groups

Division answers a sharing question: if a total is split fairly, how many go in each group, or how many equal groups can be made? For example, 24 counters shared among 6 children gives 4 counters per child. Division is the reverse of putting equal groups together.

Why divide?

Counting one object at a time is awkward when a total must be shared fairly. People needed a short way to organise food, objects, money and work between equal groups. Division records that fair split, while multiplication checks it by rebuilding the total from equal groups.

24 counters for 6 children

Share 24 counters equally among 6 children. Give each child one counter six times: 6 counters are used. Repeat three more rounds, using 24 counters altogether. Each child has 4, so 24 ÷ 6 = 4. Check: 6 groups of 4 make 24.

What does the answer count?

A reasonable mistake is to say 6 because there are 6 children, or 24 because there are 24 counters. The question may feel as if every number should appear in the answer. First ask what you are finding: counters per child gives 4; number of children gives 6. The wording decides the unit.

Where it helps

Division helps when teams need equal numbers, ingredients must be shared, or objects must be packed into identical boxes. If 30 cards go into 5 equal packs, each pack has 6 cards. If a remainder is left, it matters: one extra object may need a new group or a different decision.
